How this works

A pay rise or a new job offer looks great as a yearly number, but what lands in your account each payday is smaller. Part of every extra dollar goes to income tax, the Medicare levy and, if you have one, a HELP repayment. This calculator works out your current and new take-home pay side by side, per week, fortnight, month and year, using the 2026–27 resident tax rates and the low income tax offset (LITO).

The effective tax on the rise is how much of the extra gross pay goes to tax, Medicare and HELP. It's often higher than your marginal tax rate. That's because the Medicare levy (2%) and HELP repayments, which are worked out on your whole income once you pass a threshold, both grow with your pay, and LITO phases out on incomes up to $66,667.

Super: the super guarantee is 12% of qualifying earnings from 1 July 2025 (still 12% in 2026–27). If an offer is plus super, the super is paid on top of the salary. If it's a package that includes super, the salary you're taxed on is about package ÷ 1.12, so a $100,000 package is roughly $89,286 salary plus $10,714 super. Always check which kind of offer you have.

FAQ

Will a pay rise push all my income into a higher tax bracket?

No. Australia's tax brackets are marginal, so only the dollars above each threshold are taxed at the higher rate. Your take-home pay always goes up when your gross pay does, though by less than the rise.

Why is the effective tax on my rise higher than my tax bracket?

On top of the marginal tax rate, the Medicare levy (usually 2%) and any HELP repayment also take a share. LITO also reduces as income rises up to $66,667.

What does 'package including super' mean?

The quoted amount includes the employer's 12% super guarantee. Your taxable salary is about the package divided by 1.12, and the rest goes to your super fund.

Is this exactly what my payslip will show?

Not exactly. Employers withhold tax using ATO withholding schedules for each pay, and your final tax is settled at tax time. Use these figures as an estimate.

Made by SlateAndTally. Rates checked against ato.gov.au on 27 Oct 2026. Assumes an Australian resident for the full year with the tax-free threshold, and includes the low income tax offset (LITO), but ignores other offsets, deductions, the Medicare levy surcharge and family thresholds.
