How Couples Can Budget Together (Australia): Joint, Split or Proportional?
Money is one of the most common sources of tension for couples. A shared plan helps. There's no single right setup; what matters is that both people feel it's fair. General information only.
Three common setups
- **All joint:** both pays go into a joint account; all bills and spending come from it.
- **Proportional:** each person puts in a share of shared costs based on income.
- **Equal split plus personal money:** each puts the same amount into a bills account and keeps the rest.
Example: proportional on fortnightly pay
Example only: Partner A takes home A$2,600 a fortnight and Partner B A$1,400. Total A$4,000. Shared costs are A$2,800. A contributes 65% (A$1,820) and B contributes 35% (A$980). Both are left with personal money in the same proportion.
Talk about it at a good time
Pick a calm moment, not right after a big bill. Some couples do a short "money date" each payday: check bills, savings, and anything coming up.
Things to agree on
- Which costs are shared (rent, groceries, kids) and which aren't (hobbies).
- A spending amount either person can spend without checking in.
- Savings goals and who owns which accounts.
- How to handle irregular income or a pay change.
Different paydays
If you're paid on different weeks, list both paydays on one calendar. Assign each shared bill to the pay that arrives first before it's due. See our household budget planner.
Keep some independence
Many people keep some savings in their own name. Moneysmart has information about money and relationships, including financial abuse support. If you feel controlled around money, 1800RESPECT (1800 737 732) is available.
