Sole Trader Tax Tracker (Australia)
As a sole trader you report business income in your own individual tax return, and if you're registered for GST you also lodge a BAS. The easiest tax time is the one where your records were kept as you went.
What to track
- Every payment received, with date, client and GST (if registered).
- Every business expense, with receipt and category. The ATO generally asks you to keep records for 5 years.
- A running estimate of tax to set aside, so the bill isn't a surprise.
Tools
Browser app: the Sole Trader Tax & BAS Dashboard logs income and expenses, totals GST by BAS quarter and estimates a tax set-aside using AU 2025-26 and 2026-27 rates.
Spreadsheets: the Australian Tax Time Bundle and Sole Trader Income & Expense Spreadsheet on Etsy.
General record-keeping only. Not tax advice and not affiliated with the ATO.
When do I need to register for GST?
Generally when your GST turnover is A$75,000 or more (A$150,000 for non-profits), or if you drive for a ride-sourcing service. Check ato.gov.au for your situation.
When is my tax return due?
If you lodge yourself, your individual return for the year ending 30 June is generally due by 31 October. Registered tax agents can have later dates.
Is this tax advice?
