Paid Fortnightly, Billed Monthly? How to Line Up Your Bills So Every Pay Works
Most Australians on wages are paid fortnightly, but rent may be weekly, the phone is monthly, insurance is yearly and rego is whenever it feels like it. That mismatch is why one payday feels comfortable and the next is a struggle, even when your total income covers everything. The fix is to convert every bill into a fortnightly amount.
Step 1: list every bill with how often it's charged
Go through three months of bank statements. Write down each bill, its amount and its frequency: weekly, fortnightly, monthly, quarterly or yearly.
Step 2: convert everything to fortnightly
- Weekly × 2
- Monthly × 12 ÷ 26
- Quarterly × 4 ÷ 26
- Yearly ÷ 26
Don't use monthly ÷ 2. There are 26 fortnights in a year, not 24, so halving monthly bills underestimates them. A $100 monthly bill is really $46.15 a fortnight.
Step 3: create a bills buffer account
Add up all your fortnightly amounts. That's your bills transfer. Every payday, move exactly that amount into a dedicated bills account and pay every bill from it. Because the money comes in evenly and goes out unevenly, the balance will rise and fall. That's the point. It needs a starting buffer, which you can build over a few pays, so it never dips below zero in a heavy month.
Step 4: move due dates where you can
Many providers let you change your billing date. Ask for monthly bills to fall in the days just after a payday. It doesn't change the total, but it reduces the stress.
Step 5: plan for three-pay months
Twice a year, a month has three fortnightly paydays. If your monthly budget assumes two, that third pay is a bonus. Put it toward debt, an emergency fund or a sinking fund. Our post on three-pay months explains it.
What's left is truly yours
Once bills and savings are taken out on payday, the rest is your spending money for groceries, fuel and life. Divide it by 14 to see your daily number. That figure is surprisingly calming.
