How to Start a Budget in Australia: A First-Timer's Guide

26 October 2026 · SlateAndTally

If you've never budgeted, it can feel like a lot. It doesn't need to be. A budget is just a plan for your next pay. Here's how to start in an afternoon.

1. Find your take-home pay

Look at your payslip for the amount that actually lands in your account. If you're paid fortnightly, that's your starting number. If your pay changes, use your lowest typical pay.

2. List your bills

Go through the last two or three bank statements and write down every regular bill: rent or mortgage, power, phone, internet, insurance, subscriptions, rego. Note how often each one comes (weekly, monthly, quarterly, yearly).

3. Convert everything to your pay cycle

Paid fortnightly? Use these:

4. Set your spending amounts

Groceries, fuel, kids, and fun money. Use what you actually spent last month as a starting point, not what you wish you spent.

5. Pay yourself first

Even a small amount each pay into savings builds the habit. Start with an emergency fund.

6. The payday routine

Every payday: move bill money, move savings, check what's due before next pay. Ten minutes, done.

7. Expect to adjust

Your first budget won't be perfect. After a month, look at what went over and tweak. That's normal.
