How much is car registration in QLD? Official costs and how to plan

Car registration is one of those bills that always seems to land at the worst time. In Queensland, your rego bill is made up of three parts, and the total depends mostly on how many cylinders your car has and which CTP insurer you choose. Below are the official Queensland figures for a 12-month private car registration, as published by the Department of Transport and Main Roads, along with how to plan for the bill a little each pay. Always get your exact amount from the official quote tool before you pay. Wondering whether to renew for less than a year? Read our 6-month vs 12-month rego guide.

Source and date: all fees below are from qld.gov.au, Registration costs, shown as "cost as at 1 October 2026" for a 12-month private-use vehicle up to 4t. They are a guide only. Use the official registration quote tool for your exact cost.

What makes up a QLD rego bill

According to the Queensland Government, the registration cost for a light vehicle such as a car or motorcycle has three parts:

The registration and traffic improvement fees help build and maintain roads, and CTP covers injury claims involving your vehicle.

Concession card holders

Queensland offers reduced registration fees for eligible concession and seniors card holders. For example, the official table lists a 4-cylinder car at $192.75 registration plus the $67.25 traffic improvement fee and CTP, for a total of $671.80–687.80, for concession and seniors cards issued from 1 July 1994. The government notes the CTP premium is not discounted. Check your eligibility and the full concession table on qld.gov.au.

Paying for 3 or 6 months instead of 12

Queensland lets you renew for a shorter period. The official page notes that if you renew for less than 12 months, you pay a surcharge, which covers updating the register and issuing extra notices. That means shorter terms can make each bill smaller, but generally cost more across a full year. The quote tool shows the exact amounts for each term. A shorter term can help when cash is tight, while saving a little each pay towards a 12-month renewal avoids the surcharge.

How to plan for your QLD rego bill

The easiest way to stop rego from wrecking a pay is to set aside a little each payday. Here is the maths for a 4-cylinder car using the official 12-month range of $864.50–880.50:

Pay cycleSet aside each pay
Weekly (÷ 52)about $16.63–16.93
Fortnightly (÷ 26)about $33.25–33.87
Monthly (÷ 12)about $72.04–73.38

Round up a little, because fees are reviewed regularly. Use the same method for your car's band: total ÷ number of pays in a year.

Selling or transferring a car

If you sell a registered car in Queensland, the registration transfers with the vehicle and the official fee table lists a transfer fee. If you cancel a registration instead, you may be able to get a refund of the unused portion, less an administration fee. The rules and current amounts are on the official fee page, so check them before you sell, cancel or buy, and factor any fees into your budget for the change.
