Fortnightly vs Monthly Budget: Which Suits You?

26 October 2026 · SlateAndTally

Should you budget by the fortnight or by the month? The short answer: budget the way you're paid. Here's why, and when the other way works better.

Fortnightly budgeting

Best if you're paid fortnightly. Each pay has its own plan, so you always know what this pay needs to cover. The catch: monthly bills don't line up neatly. Convert them (monthly × 12 ÷ 26) and set that aside every pay.

Monthly budgeting

Best if you're paid monthly, or if most of your bills are monthly and you have a buffer. It's a simpler big picture, but you need the discipline to make one pay last the month.

The hybrid

Some people budget monthly using two pays, and treat the extra pay in the two three-pay months as a bonus. That works well if you already have a small buffer.
