How Many Pays Until Christmas 2026? A Fortnightly Pay Plan for Aussies
Christmas feels far away until you count your pays. Once you know exactly how many paydays you have before 25 December, a scary total turns into a small, fixed amount you set aside each pay. Here's how to work it out, plus a quick calculator.
The quick answer for 2026
Christmas Day 2026 falls on a Friday. If you're paid fortnightly and today is late October, you have four or five pays left before Christmas Eve, depending on your payday. If your next payday is on 28 or 29 October, you get five. If it's any later, you get four.
If you're paid weekly, you'll usually have eight or nine pays left. If you're paid monthly, it's usually two: one in November and one in December, as long as your December pay lands before the 24th.

Pick your next payday to see how many pays you have left.
Step 1: Count your pays, not your weeks
Write down every payday between now and Christmas Eve. Don't count a pay that lands after 24 December, because most of your shopping will be done by then. If your employer pays early before public holidays, check your payslip or ask payroll.
Step 2: Put a real number on Christmas
List everything Christmas costs you: gifts per person, food, travel, decorations, Kris Kringle, school and teacher gifts, and the extra fuel. Our guide on how much to spend on Christmas walks through it, and the gift budget per person page helps you split it fairly.
Step 3: Divide by your pays
Take what you still need to find and divide it by the number of pays left. That's your Christmas set-aside per pay. If the number is too high, trim the list now rather than putting it on a card in December. Cutting one gift or switching to a family Secret Santa often closes the gap.
Step 4: Move it on payday
Set up an automatic transfer to a separate savings account (or a bank "bucket") named Christmas, timed for payday. Money you can't see is money you don't spend. If you already use sinking funds, Christmas is just one more jar.
What about a three-pay month?
Fortnightly pays sometimes give you three paydays in one calendar month. If one of your remaining months has three, that extra pay can cover a big chunk of Christmas without squeezing your usual bills. See three-pay months explained.
If you're starting late
- Shop your list in order of who matters most, and stop when the jar is empty.
- Use the January plan: anything not bought by Christmas can wait for the sales, if it's still wanted.
- Be careful with buy now, pay later. Repayments land in January, when money's already tight. Read BNPL at Christmas first.
- If you're struggling with bills, the National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007 offers free financial counselling.
Plan the whole season in one place
The Christmas Planner app keeps gift lists per person, event costs and a savings countdown together, and the Christmas budget planner page shows how it works. If you want the fortnightly side sorted too, the Fortnightly Budget app plans each payday with the bills smoothed out.
