Missed the 31 October Tax Deadline? What to Do Next (Australia)

If you lodge your own tax return, the usual deadline is 31 October. If you've missed it, or you're about to, don't panic and don't ignore it. This is general information only; check ato.gov.au or a registered tax agent for your situation.

If you haven't lodged yet but it's before 31 October

Lodge as soon as you can through myTax (via myGov), or contact a registered tax agent now. People who use a registered agent and are on the agent's list before 31 October may have extra time under the agent's lodgment program. Ask the agent directly.

If 31 October has passed

If you can't pay what you owe

Lodge on time anyway, or as soon as possible, then contact the ATO about a payment plan. The ATO has options for people experiencing difficulty.

If you don't need to lodge

Some people may not need to lodge in a particular year. The ATO has a non-lodgment advice process. Check ato.gov.au for whether it applies to you.

Get your records together

Gather the same items as for an on-time return: income statement (usually pre-filled in myTax), bank interest, private health statement, receipts for deductions, and any side-hustle income. See our self-lodge checklist.

Make next year easier

Keep records sorted all year

See the Australian Tax Time Bundle, the Sole Trader Income & Expense Spreadsheet, or the Sole Trader Tax & BAS Dashboard app.
